Michael Thalmann is a Swiss pianist, composer, and visual artist whose work bridges tradition and innovation across sound and image. A graduate of the Musikhochschule Bern, he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe, Asia, Central and South America, with acclaimed debuts at venues such as London’s Wigmore Hall.
His musical education includes masterclasses with renowned artists such as Prof. S. Dorenski and Prof. R. Kehrer at the Mozarteum Salzburg, as well as studies with Liszt specialist Leslie Howard in London. In 1993, he joined the Fondazione Internazionale Theo Lieven per il Pianoforte in Cadenabbia, Italy, where he was mentored by Leon Fleisher and Dimitrij Bashkirov, among others.
From 2019 to 2020, Thalmann taught at a university in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province (China), working with advanced-level piano students during the early stages of the global pandemic. He has since returned to Switzerland, continuing to offer masterclasses and online instruction to professional pianists worldwide.
In recent years, he has expanded into visual and digital art, creating intuitive, nature-inspired digital paintings and a series of original NFT video artworks. Many of these pieces integrate his own music and are available through Saatchi Art and on the Tezos blockchain (Objkt).
Michael Thalmann’s interdisciplinary practice is rooted in improvisation, reflection, and a constant search for the poetic — whether in sound, image, or silence.
